Construction projects on the rise, analyst says

Construction projects around the country should increase as credit eases and the cost of raw material stabilizes, according to analyst Chase Jacobson. The Sterne Agee analyst said long-term demand for construction later this year "will lead to a return of a more normal demand environment."

Utility board ranks solar power above wind power

A plan approved by the Rochester Public Utilities board in Minnesota ranked solar power above wind power as its preferred source of renewable energy. Officials said the 2009 Infrastructure Plan Update will help the board determine how to budget for future projects. They also noted that stimulus funds might prompt utilities to move ahead with renewable energy programs in the near future.

Green construction forces cities to weigh costs, benefits

Minnesota cities are trying to balance the higher cost of green construction with their desire for environmentally friendly public buildings. In Edina, Minn., city officials are rebidding a contract for a geothermal heating and cooling system after an initial bid came in at $825,000. The city had expected to spend $248,000 on the system. Some cities also say they will not seek LEED certification for their new buildings because of the costs involved with documenting green features.

Consumers becoming more optimistic about the future

The consumer confidence index jumped almost 7 points in August, according to The Conference Board, a research group. However, "consumers were more upbeat in their short-term outlook for both the economy and the job market ... but only slightly more upbeat in their income expectations," said Lynn Franco of The Conference Board. "As long as earnings continue to weigh heavily on consumers' minds, spending is likely to remain constrained."
